Rabbi Addresses Bishops’ Synod

CWNews: Denouncing the ‘terrible and vicious words’ spoken in last month’s UN address by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Chief Rabbi Shear-Yashuv Cohen of Haifa urged the Synod of Bishops on Monday to ‘protect, defend and save Israel, the one and only sovereign state of the ‘people of the book,’ from the hands of our enemies.’ The rabbi also told reporters that Pope Pius XII ‘should not be sanctified or looked up to because of his failure to save us, to raise his voice, even if he secretly tried to help … Maybe he was afraid, or for other reasons known to him he did not raise his voice. And that we cannot forget.’ He added, ‘I am not empowered by the families of the millions of deceased to say we forget, we forgive.’

Pope Says World’s Financial System Built On Sand

Timesonline reports:
Pope Benedict XVI today said that the global credit crisis shows that the world’s financial systems are “built on sand” and that only the works of God have “solid reality”.

Opening a Synod of Bishops in the Vatican the Pope referred to a passage from St Matthew’s Gospel on false prophets, saying ”He who builds only on visible and tangible things like success, career and money builds the house of his life on sand”.  Full article here.

Cardinal Seán Brady Talks Tough on EU’s anti-Christian Agenda

In another show of episcopal fortitude, Cardinal Seán Brady has warned that the anti-life, anti-family and anti-religious policies being pushed by the EU are turning many Catholic voters against the European Union. Hopefully, bishops taking strong stands in areas where politics and morals coalesce (all the “hot button” “social” issues) is a trend which will increase, both nationally and internationally.

Holy Father: Contraception Violates “the Beauty of Conjugal Love”

On Friday, Pope Benedict send a message to the President of the John Paul II Pontifical Institute for the study of Marriage and the Family. The message was occasioned by an International Congress marking 40 years of Pope Paul VI’s encyclical Humanae Vitae. Both Vatican Radio and AFP have coverage of this story.

The tendentious journalism of the AFP report may not be trustworthy, but it contains this notable paragraph:

The 81-year-old pope’s message Friday to a seminar on the encyclical also reaffirmed that the rhythm method is an acceptable form of contraception for couples in “dire circumstances” who need to space their children.

If the Holy Father really restricted the use of infertile periods (he almost certainly would not have said “rhythm method”) to “dire circumstances,” then he is distancing himself from the increasingly liberal interpretations of the Church’s traditional tolerance of this practice. The “tolerance” was limited to highly restricted circumstances, and the practice of the method for putting off contraception was always seen to be temporary.

Bishop Arthur Serratelli: “Children’s Eucharistic Prayer” to Go

Although there may be a “new text” in the future, for now “The Vatican plans to remove the Eucharistic Prayers for Children from the authorized prayers of the Roman Missal,” according to Catholic World News. This is good news indeed, as the unprecedented deliberate “downgrading” of the Church’s liturgy did less to promote youthful sanctity and more to denigrate from tradition and liturgical piety.

Vietnam’s Archbishop Under Virtual House Arrest

Hanoi, Oct. 1, 2008 (CWNews.com) - In an escalating battle with government officials in Hanoi, Archbishop Joseph Ngo Quang Kiet is now under virtual house arrest.

The archbishop’s office is closed. His staff has locked the gate outside the office to prevent sudden attacks by the pro-government mobs that gather regularly outside, yelling slogans in praise of Communism and questioning the prelate’s patriotism. Some of his normal activities have also been delayed or cancelled due to security reasons. Archbishop Ngo cannot leave his residence without confronting the mobs, and the faithful dare not call on him for the same reason.  Full story here.
