Cardinal Egan Criticizes Giuliani for Taking Holy Communion

NEW YORK (LifeSiteNews) - The decision by several prominent pro-abortion politicians to publicly receive Holy Communion at papal Masses during the recent visit of Pope Benedict XVI, despite clear Church teaching that says that their reception of Communion would constitute a grave sacrilege, may have backfired.

While at first it seemed like it would be business as usual, today Cardinal Edward Egan of New York issued a statement condemning the reception of Holy Communion by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Pope Addresses Young on Pilgrimage to Lourdes

Among the inspiring words the Holy Father wrote to the participants in the annual youth pilgrimage were the following:

“[C]elebrate with enthusiasm the joy of loving Christ and of believing and hoping in him, and to follow with trust the path of initiation you have before you.

“I particularly invite you to take up the witness of your ancestors in the faith, and to learn to welcome the word of God — in silence and meditation — so that it can mould your hearts and produce generous fruits in you,” he added.

This pilgrimage, the Pontiff concluded, “is also a good time to allow yourselves to be asked by Christ: ‘What do you want to do with your lives?’ May those among you who feel the call to follow him in the priesthood or in consecrated life — as have so many young participants in these pilgrimages — reply to the Lord’s call and put yourselves totally at the service of the Church, with a life completely dedicated to the Kingdom of heaven. You will never be disappointed.”

Archdiocesan Radio Station to Reduce Protestant Programs

So much for ecumenism.  I mean, what is a Catholic sponsored radio station for anyway? You can catch a Mass at 10:00 and then, at 11:00, you can tune in on Reverend Wheeler’s  revival  rally, and maybe catch a charismatic healing service at noon.  That’s the spirit of the new mission, something for everybody.

CNA reports: Hartford, Apr 29, 2008 / 04:06 am (CNA).- Citing the need to make an “identity change” and an overly competitive spirit among some of its non-Catholic radio shows, a Catholic-sponsored radio channel in Connecticut is reshuffling its schedule and cutting many of its Protestant slots, the Hartford Courant reports. Pro-Abortion “Catholic” Politicians Invited to Papal Mass

Archbishop Wuerl of Washington, DC, and Cardinal Egan of New York invited pro-abortion politicians to papal Mass.  Robert Novak has the story in the New York Times, which begins:

“In the aftermath of the U.S. visit by Pope Benedict XVI, traditional Catholics are asking a troublesome question: Did pro-choice politicians receiving Communion at the papal Masses indicate the pope had softened on the abortion question? The answer is no. On the contrary, it reflected disobedience to Benedict by the archbishops of New York and Washington.” The rest of the article is worth reading just to be informed.

Senate Democrats Object to Resolution Welcoming Pope

Led by Senator Barbara Boxer Democrats objected to the “values” Pope Benedict placed on “each and every human life.”  It smacked of anti-abortion doctrine, they said. In this objection, are these anti-life forces admitting that the “fetus” is a human life? They certainly are, if their logic means anything.  Otherwise, why would they object to placing value “on each and every human life.” (my emphasis)  Read one article here. Senator Browneback, the promoter of the undiluted resolution, ended up excising the pro-life reference in order to get something passed by our Congress by way of a welcome, something which said nothing.

Father Raymond de Souza Takes China to Task

Good article here which exposes the murderous regime that still runs China today, after fifty nine years of bloody tyranny, and the farce of the Olympic “torch of freedom.”

Peruvian Cardinal Prohibits Communion in the Hand

Finally, the abuse that became the custom, is being eradicated by a prelate who truly reverences the Real Presence of Christ in His Blessed Sacrament. Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne, Archbishop of the city of saints, Lima, Peru,  informed the Italian website, Petrus, that he was banning the practice to promote “greater reverence for the Blessed Sacrament.”

There are six saints who lived in this ancient city in the Andes. They are: Saints Rose of Lima, Turibius, her bishop, Francis Solano, Martin de Porres, and John Massias.  All of them graced Lime in the first half of the seventeenth century.

Pope Addresses US Bishops

Covering many issues, the following paragraph was the highlight of the pope’s address.

“Is it consistent to profess our beliefs in church on Sunday, and then during the week to promote business practices or medical procedures contrary to those beliefs? Is it consistent for practicing Catholics to ignore or exploit the poor and the marginalized, to promote sexual behavior contrary to Catholic moral teaching, or to adopt positions that contradict the right to life of every human being from conception to natural death? Any tendency to treat religion as a private matter must be resisted. Only when their faith permeates every aspect of their lives do Christians become truly open to the transforming power of the Gospel.”

Abortion is “Murder” and a “Negation of the Right to Life”: Maltese Bishops to Council of Europe

CoE is deliberating a motion that calls for the decriminalisation of abortion in all 47 member states

By Thaddeus M. Baklinski

VALLETTA, MALTA, April 15, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The bishops of Malta and Gozo issued a press release today saying that abortion is not a choice but murder, and not a right but a negation of the right to life.

The statement defending the right to life was issued to encourage a pro-life position to members attending a plenary session of the Council of Europe (CoE) which is meeting in Strasbourg this week. The CoE is currently debating a motion calling for the decriminalisation of abortion in all of the CoE’s 47 member states. The motion would also further lift restrictions in those countries where abortion is already legalised.

The resolution calls on all 47 member states, including Malta, to decriminalise abortion, “guarantee women’s effective exercise of their right to abortion” and “allow women freedom of choice and offer the conditions of a free and enlightened choice.” Continue Reading »

CNA STAFF, Apr 14, 2008 / 09:17 pm (CNA).- A high profile Muslim cleric and Hamas member of the Palestinian parliament gave a sermon last Friday in which he declared that soon Rome, “the capital of the Catholics” will be soon overtaken by Islam.

Yunis al-Astal, the cleric in question, told his listeners that “Very soon, Allah willing, Rome will be conquered, just like Constantinople was, as was prophesized by our Prophet Muhammad. Today, Rome is the capital of the Catholics, or the Crusader capital, which has declared its hostility to Islam…” Full article here.

St. Thomas University Cancels Talk by Pro-Life Speaker

The following excerpt is form LifeSite News:

The University of St. Thomas, a Catholic college in Minnesota, is coming under fire for canceling a planned speech by respected African-American pro-life advocate Star Parker. Parker was slated to appear at the college on April 21, but UST officials have censored the appearance. Katie Kieffer, a 2005 alumna of St. Thomas and the founder of a student newspaper with a pro-life perspective there, says she booked Parker’s speech. But UST Vice President of Student Affairs Jane Canney apparently nixed the idea citing “concerns” that the lecture was sponsored by Young America’s Foundation, national group for conservative college students that frequently sponsors pro-life and conservative speakers at colleges nationwide. The UST administrator denied a request from the student newspaper and the campus pro-life group Students for Human Life to reserve a room for the Parker lecture. “Our Catholic university has hosted two decidedly liberal speakers in the past year,” Kieffer said. “For a person in charge of Campus Life on a Catholic campus, she is closed to our efforts to present conservative and Catholic pro-life values.”

When I read this I remembered a couple of years ago that the commencement speaker at their 2006 graduation, Ben Kessler, was razzed during his talk for encouraging his fellow graduates to lead lives of purity, honesty, and generosity. It was the purity part that irked them, even bringing on catcalls, boos, and obscenities.  What a number of the students and faculty to walk out of his speech were these words, spoken in order to highlight how ungenerous the vast majority of Catholics really are: “Birth control is not good for the female, the male, nor the long-term health of the relationship; birth control is selfish.”

Two days later, the president of the college, Father Dennis Dease issued a statement of apology for Kessler’s address. This courageous young man, an ESPN Academic All American football player, was planning on entering the seminary.  I hope he is still on that road.  We’ve had enough of the likes of Father Dease (who must have had something to do with Star Parker’s cancellation.) Pray for Ben Kessler.  Satan goes after such souls with his full arsenal.

There was another All American football player from Doug Flutie’s 1986 Boston College Cotton Bowl champions.  Lineman Mike Ruth.  He, too, planned on entering the seminary after graduation.  But he never made it, choosing instead to marry.  Poor Mr. Ruth needs prayers for a different reason. He has hit rock bottom in every way, hardly able to survive an ongoing messy divorce. Mike played two years for the Patriots. Now he has lost everything. He still has a strong Catholic faith and wears the Miraculous Medal. May Our Lady see him through and put him back on his feet.

Father Richard McBrien Lectures the Pope on Confession

Excerpts from California Catholic Daily:

The pope “is surely well aware of the sharp decline in the number of confessions over the past few decades,” wrote McBrien (the Sept. 21, 2007 Wall Street Journal reported that in 2005 only 26% of U.S. Catholics went to Confession.) But, McBrien wondered, is the pope aware of a “provocative article” on Confession in the Feb. 29 edition of Commonweal. In “The Empty Box: Why Catholics Skip Confession,” Franciscan Fr. Raymond C. Mann, a former missionary to Bolivia and currently at St. Anthony Shrine in Boston, described the tremendous decline in Confessions he has experienced over a 50-year period.

For many of these Catholics, according to Mann, “sufficient knowledge and freedom [two necessary requirements for the commission of a sin] were no longer active parts of the equation. If you broke the law, you had to confess it. Confession before Communion became something akin to taking a Saturday night bath before going to Sunday Mass.”

Interview With Associate Producer of Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed

Ignatius Insight’s Carl E Olson has a very revealing interview with Mark Mathis, the man behind this anti-Darwinian documentary. It opens in theaters April 18. Although “Intelligent Design” falls short of the revealed truth of Creation from nothing, it still has the promoters of atheistic materialism bristling.  Read here.
